What is 316 Stainless Steel
What exactly is 316 Stainless Steel?
It is common to add alloys to steel to improve the desired properties. This stainless steel grade is marine, is known as Type 316, is resistant to certain types of acidic environments.
There are numerous types of stainless steel , 316. The most common are the L F, H, and H variants. Each variant is different and each serves various purposes. L means that 316L steel is more carbon than 316.
for 316 as well as 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
While they are similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both have higher resistance to corrosion. They also have greater strength at high temperatures. They are not hardened with heat treatments and can be easily stretched and shaped.
A distinction between the 316 and 316L Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel is less carbon than 316. But even with its low carbon levels, 316L is very similar to 316 in nearly every way. The cost is comparable as are both durable and resistant against corrosion, making it a suitable choice for conditions that require a lot of stress.
However, for projects that require lots for welding, then 316L can be a better choice due to the fact that 316 is more susceptible to welding corrosion over the other 316L (corrosion to the weld). However, 316L can be annealed, allowing it to resist the attenuation of welding. The 316L is a suitable stainless steel for use in high temperature, high corrosion applications This is why it is so sought-after in marine and construction.
None of 316 nor 316L is the cheapest choice. The 304 is comparable to 304L but the cost is lower. It isn't as durable as the 317 or 317L which have a higher molybdenum concentration and better total corrosion resistance.
