1. What is a EV On-board Chargers?
EV On-board Chargers, referred to as OBC (On-borad Charger), is mainly composed of power circuit (rectifier + PFC + phase-shifted full bridge & LLC) and control circuit as on-board power electronic components. OBC is an AC/DC converter. For specific functions, you can search online.
2. What are the current mainstream charging methods for electric vehicles?
As shown in the figure below, the main charging methods for electric vehicles currently include DC fast charging and AC slow charging. The left side is the fast charging interface, and the right is the slow charging interface.

For electric vehicles, the biggest difference between fast and slow charging is:
For slow charging, the external power source needs to pass through the EV On-board Chargers to convert AC to DC before charging the battery.
For fast charging, the external charging device has converted AC to DC and directly charges the battery.
In other words, simply understand that the biggest difference between AC charging piles and DC charging piles is that the DC charging piles externally place the EV On-board Chargers on the charging piles.
If the EV On-board Chargers is cancelled, the biggest problem is that all the AC charging piles on the market cannot be used. At the moment when the DC charging piles are not yet popular, it will inevitably lead to a lot of waste of charging resources. In addition, due to cost considerations, the current vehicle-mounted piles equipped by car companies are also exchange-slow piles. Therefore, at this stage, the time to cancel the EV On-board Chargers has not yet come.
So why do manufacturers propose to cancel the EV On-board Chargers? In fact, it is also a solution for cost considerations. If the EV On-board Chargers is eliminated, the cost of the entire vehicle will definitely drop. It is also a solution to equip the vehicle with a 20KW DC pile. The overall cost of the two is about 8,000, which is actually the same, but the biggest problem is that not all communities have capacitors installed with 20KW truck-mounted piles, and there is a big obstacle to popularization.
Now many OBC manufacturers are also developing high-power EV On-board Chargers to achieve high-power AC fast charging. For example, BYD has developed a 40KW OBC, and Tesla also has a 20KW OBC, all of which are popularizing the application of exchange fast charging.
