Why do we need titanium plating?
Titanium plating is generally used to improve the surface wear resistance of objects. For example, the taps and drill bits used in high-speed machining centers can be plated with titanium to improve the wear resistance of the tool. There is also titanium plating for the surface treatment of piston rings, which is also used to improve abrasion resistance. In addition, there is decorative titanium plating, which is not as good as the similar gold rings that can be bought on the street for a few dollars. They are generally in the titanium plating treatment. The main color is golden, which looks good and prevents the surface of the object from oxidation and rust.
Commonly used processes for titanium plating include vacuum coating and spraying processes.
Vacuum coating includes magnetron sputtering method, arc ion plating method, etc. If nitrogen is passed in the coating process, titanium nitride can be formed, and the coating color is golden yellow, otherwise white. This method has a thin coating, generally about 15 microns, and the coating is bright and does not require subsequent processing.
The spraying method is cold spraying. The coating is very thick and can reach the order of millimeters, and the surface is rough and requires subsequent processing.
The difference between titanium carbide and titanium nitride coating:
Different colors: titanium carbide coating is black, titanium nitride coating is golden.
Different hardness: Titanium carbide is harder than titanium nitride. But the high-temperature oxidation resistance of titanium carbide is not as good as titanium nitride, so the titanium carbonitride film is derived. In recent years, there are more popular titanium aluminum nitride, chromium nitride film, and so on. In the process, titanium carbide is more difficult than titanium nitride, and the control range is narrower.
The above two coating processes are already very mature. They are divided into decorative plating and tool plating. Decorative plating is generally thinner than 1 micron, and tool plating is required to be thicker than 3-5 microns.
